EUROPEAN PREMIERE, NO LESS…
Salon International du Livre et de la Presse et du Multimédia, Palexpo, Geneva
April 30th to May 4th…
To the best of my knowledge, (unless of course somebody else has already done it without letting me know, which really does NOT make much sense…) this is the first time that original sketches for the Lord of the Rings films have been exhibited in Europe.
While it is a modest show - only a dozen pieces - it will be great to see the sketches actually framed and on a wall, rather than being pawed by countless hands, heaped in a clutter on the floor or propping up used coffee cups.
I will be there on Sunday May 4th from 4 p.m.

Otherwise…
On the drawing board: the last bits of the Map of Numenor (haven’t I been saying this for a while now?). Do or die, or at the very least miss publication dates, so now it’s serious. The meaning of the word “deadline” becomes clear at moments like this.
Postman at the door: Just got my copy of SPECTRUM 9. For those of you not familiar with it, Spectrum is an annual catalogue of the best in sci-fi and fantasy artwork. It’s beautifully reproduced, and a must for those who want to keep up on what’s being painted these days in the field. The best part of course is that if you have a piece selected, you get a free catalogue. I’ll have a George R. R. Martin pic in this fall’s edition (it’s just so I don’t have to fork over money to get one…).
Collector’s items: As part of the BBC’s BIG READ publicity drive (a poll which will run until the autumn and endeavours to discover Britain’s favourite work of fiction), WHSmith is creating 40 ‘LITTLE READS’, first-chapter ‘samplers’ to encourage potential readers to buy the most popular books. The current poll-favourite is of courseTHE LORD OF THE RINGS. These samplers - which you buy for £1 but have a £1 voucher in the back redeemable against the full book - carry a reduced-down version of the book cover on the front, and the Gandalf cover is the one being used. The samplers will only be around for a short time, and HarperCollins anticipates them becoming real collector’s items. So please run out and pick up lots - that way I can always come begging for copies in case I miss them…

In the works: The third of the limited prints series, this time around: Gandalf Returns to Hobbiton ( http://www.john-howe.com/portfolio/gallery/details.php?image_id=94 )
Tolkien exhibition: the opening is May 6th at 5 p.m. at the Municipal Library in Charleville-Mézières. The poster will be up next week on the News.
See you then!
