As an artist and Tolkien devotee, I enjoy your work. I especially love the sense of motion so many of your paintings have, like the one of Sam and Shelob and the ubiquitous but deservedly so one of Gandalf and the Balrog.

I must say this is probably one of the most USEFUL websites around, especially the forum.
My first copy of LOTR had John's illustrations on the covers and since then I've been hooked on his artwork -
the way it just kicks your imagination's butt and you just cannot see the Nazgul or Gandalf any other way...

I've been looking through your portfolio and it's now reached 6am with no sleep. I stumble across your image of Merlin and it blows me away, truely a masterpiece. admittedly i think to myself 'if only' but at the same time your work inspires me to become better. Thank you
